Musical Processes: Listening
Number of Students: One to Four
Description: Students read and discuss aspects of four different cultures and then listen to four examples of music from these cultures seeking to identify the culture from which the music arises.
Rationale: This activity seeks to include aspects of Studies of Society and Environment with musical learning. This task can easily be evolved to include other cultural aspects in more detail such as visual art, history, geography, literature and dance.
Intended Learning
Outcomes:
Instrumentation: Identifying the sound of certain instruments.

  • Engaging students in a discussion about their listening experiences; and, or
  • Monitoring student progress in identifying the four pieces.
Extension: This activity may be quite simply refined and used on multiple occasions by selecting different music, by selecting different cultures to focus, and by extending the content included.
